Pyrex No Leak Lids 6-Pc Storage Set Review

Pyrex No Leak Lids 6-Pc Storage Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Like many people these days I was looking to replace my old, barely-functioning plastic storage containers and upgrade to glass for health reasons. In my quest for the best product I bought and ultimately returned Snapware Glasslock, Kinetic Glasslock, and Anchor Hocking TrueSeal. The Anchor Hocking TrueSeal leaked like a sieve so that was an immediate no. The Snapware Glasslock and Kinetic Glasslock both were leakproof, but I decided against them because I like the look of Pyrex No Leak better, and it has additional benefits such as a microwaveable lid and oven proof glass.
What I love about Pyrex No Leak: First and foremost it is 100% leakproof. I was a little worried about buying Pyrex because their Basic Glass Containers (blue lids) and Glass Lids Containers (red lids) are definitely not leakproof. I tested the Pyrex No Leak out of the box by filling them with water and shaking them upside down, not one drop came out. Yesterday, I packed soup for lunch and my lunch bag turned upside down in the car. The No Leak performed great and not a drop was spilled. The round and rectangular shapes are equally waterproof.
Next I feel that Pyrex No Leak has the best overall features of any glass containers on the market. The lids are BPA-free, and the containers are freezer, microwave, and dishwasher (top rack) safe. While these features are pretty standard, Pyrex No Leak containers are also oven-safe (glass containers only) and the lids are microwaveable. All the competing lids must be removed for microwave use, and while I am trying to get away from using plastic, the reality is there are times when I don't have or don't want to use a paper towel and isn't it nice that I can simply use the lid if I want? Also the clean up is easy. To wash in the dishwasher I remove the inner rubber seal from the lid and place the seal, lid, and container in the top rack. I haven't had any issues with the lid warping or the glass containers breaking or anything like that. I've also washed the containers by hand and that is quick and easy as well.
Finally, the Pyrex No Leak containers look fantastic. The grey lids are a nice neutral color that will go with any decor. At first I was looking for clear lids. I have a few Rubbermaid Stainshield containers and I love being able to see the food through the top of the container. So I thought I would love the locking lids from Snapware and Kinetic. My personal feeling is that, sitting atop a clear glass container, the clear plastic lids look cloudy by comparison. Also I really like that the No Leak lids are traditionally styled (no lock down tabs on the sides). It looks very streamlined and modern.
Overall I am very happy with my Pyrex No Leak containers and I've ordered a bunch more. My only complaints are the following: The glass containers are hot to the touch after microwaving. This will of course be true of any glass containers, not just these. Pyrex, if you are listening I would love to see you offer a removable rubber sleeve that can go over the glass containers for microwave use (much like the cardboard sleeves that coffee shops use). Of course if I'm at home I can just use an oven mitt to remove the container, but the rubber sleeve would be great for work and travel. Another disappointment was actually the microwave vent in the lid. With my old plastic containers I would just loosen the lid and place it on top to microwave. Pyrex No Leak has a specially designed vent, and I excited to try this new feature. I reheated split pea soup in the microwave with the lid on and the microwave vent opened and after 1:30 I had split pea explosion all over the microwave. I reheated the same soup, but this time left the microwave vent closed and placed the lid loosely on top, and it heated beautifully, no mess. So I'm still giving the product five stars because it works great using the alternate method. As a side note, I was initially worried that Pyrex No Leak containers do not nest. You must put the lids on and stack them for storage. I have a LOT of containers, but this has not been an issue for me. Glass containers are going to take up more space than plastic anyway so I don't think you save too much room by having containers that nest.
I currently own the 2-cup round, 4-cup round, 3-cup rectangular, and 6-cup rectangular containers. I have since ordered more of these plus the 7-cup round and 11-cup rectangular. I wish they offered a 1 cup size, but they do not. The 2, 3, and 4-cup sizes are great for lunches. I'm looking forward to getting the 7-cup and 11-cup for large batches of leftovers.

Ball 82000 8-Ounce Plastic Freezer Storage Containers, 30-Pack Review

Ball 82000 8-Ounce Plastic Freezer Storage Containers, 30-Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These are BPA free, in case anyone was wondering. I looked on the Ball website before ordering, and it also confirmed it on the packaging. They should mention this in the description!
Anyway, I use these for just about everything. I bought a 30 pack, and just came back for more! I do a lot in bulk, and freeze small portions of pizza sauce, soup, etc. My recent discovery of homemade yogurt has been my biggest excitement for these little jars!
My kids love, LOVE fruit on the bottom yogurt. I hate all the sugar added. I started making my own yogurt, using my crockpot (just google crockpot homemade yogurt, it is super-easy!) and fresh or frozen fruit on the bottom, and the kids get SOOOO excited picking out their own individual container. They are easy enough for my kindergartener to remove the lid at lunch, but the seal is solid. Did I mention I am saving a small fortune on these individual yogurts, now that I can reuse these containers?
Back to these little containers though. The ones I already have are going strong after over a year of use. No leaking, stack perfectly, and they clean up beautifully in the dishwasher. For plastic, they are durable! I did break one when I dropped it on concrete while it had frozen soup, but that is the only one that has been damaged. These are a great value! I highly recommend them, and may be back for more if I find that 60 is not enough. : )

Pyrex Storage 6-Cup Rectangular Dish with Dark Blue Plastic Cover, Clear Review

Pyrex Storage 6-Cup Rectangular Dish with Dark Blue Plastic Cover, Clear
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We were pleased to find that this container can be used for some types of COOKING, not just for storage. We had been looking for a small baking dish, about this size.
We like the convenience of a container that can be used for baking or microwaving, and then covered and used to store any leftovers, without the bother of scooping into a different container.
Note: The container does not have handles on the sides, so it can be tricky to grasp with potholders when removing from a microwave or regular oven. On the other hand, the lack of handles allows it to use space efficiently in the refrigerator.
The paper label (found inside this Pyrex glass container) indicates it is oven safe (in a regular oven, preheated), and microwave safe, freezer safe, and dishwasher safe. However, like most Pyrex, it is NOT broiler safe, and should not be used on stove-top burners. There is also a warning against use in a toaster oven.

The plastic lid should not be used in a regular oven, of course. I assume we should unseal and loosen the lid, before we put it in the microwave. It is BPA free, according to the fine print on the paper label.
The plastic lid goes on easily, and fits OK, but not perfectly tight. I think if I turned the container upside down, the contents would leak around the edges of the lid. I assume that if we put the lid in the dishwasher, we should only use the top rack, if at all. When we looked at reviews for some of the other Pyrex storage containers, a few reviewers recommended hand washing the lid; they thought the plastic lids might keep their shape better if hand washed.
We have only had this for a few weeks, so cannot yet say how durable it is. I will add a "comment" to this review, if this product has problems later on.
In the past, we have bought Pyrex "Storage Deluxe" glass containers (with the vent tabs on the lids); they have endured years of frequent use with no chips. However, we eventually had to replace some of those vented plastic lids. We were able to buy replacement lids from the manufacturer's world kitchen web site and/or phone number; I assume that replacement lids for this non-vented type of storage container can also be obtained. I have heard that Pyrex outlet stores may also have replacement lids. I have not been able to find replacement lids on this site yet.
On the back of the paper label/insert, there are lots of warnings, in 3 languages (English, Spanish, French), but all in very small print. I think many people will have difficulty reading the tiny print.

The back of the label says: "Failure to follow these instructions can cause immediate or later breakage ..." I will mention some of the warnings and limitations here, so shoppers will know whether the limitations fit with how they plan to use the container: "AVOID SEVERE HOT TO COLD TEMPERATURE CHANGES." "DO NOT add liquid to hot dish..." Hmmm, sounds like basting is out. The label advises: "Add a small amount of liquid to the dish prior to baking foods that release liquids while baking."
DO NOT "place hot dish ... in a sink, immerse in water or place on cold or wet surfaces." ... "Allow glass to cool before soaking."
More warnings: When using the container in the microwave, do not use a microwave "BROWNER", and "DO NOT use PYREX glassware items ... to hold or support popcorn bags, microwave convenience foods with special browning wrappers, etc."
For use in a regular oven, the label implies that we should PREHEAT the oven BEFORE putting a Pyrex glass container in the oven. I have heard that some ovens use extra high heat during the preheat step -- higher than any regular baking temperature; but I don't know if that is true. I'm guessing that the exposure to extra high heat during preheating, could cause damage for Pyrex glass containers and dishes.
Information about measurements, for those who are looking for a particular size / shape for a particular recipe or storage need: The capacity is 6 cups or 1.42 Liters. The dimensions 8 x 6 x 2" are etched on the underside of the container. At first glance, the side walls appear almost straight; the walls are sloped outward at a very slight angle. Thus the length and width at the bottom are smaller than the length and width around the top edge.

Approximate Measurements of INTERIOR: The inside height is about 2 1/8", slightly more than labeled. The inside length and width, at the bottom: 7 1/8" x 5 1/8". The length and width near the top edge: 8 1/8" x 6 1/4".

EXTERIOR measurements (approximate): At outside top edge, without the lid: 8 1/2" x 6 5/8" x 2 3/8". With the lid on: 8 3/4" x 6 13/16" x 2 7/16".
I see that Pyrex recently came out with a very similar rectangular containers with a different lid, labeled "No Leak" -- the lid has a vent tab which can be opened or closed. They might have a tighter seal; we have not yet tried that version. If I were buying this again, I would consider that version. Here is a link to the version with the vented lid: Pyrex No Leak Lids 6 Cup Rectangle Baking Dish with Plastic Lid. Based on a quick glance, they appear about the same size; I don't know whether the lids are interchangeable.

Approximate capacity: 11 cups or 2.75 quarts or 2,6 Liters.
The container's side walls are sloped outward at a slight angle. Thus the length and width at the bottom are smaller than the length and width around the top edge. At the very bottom, the edges are rounded.
Approximate Measurements of INTERIOR, without lid: The inside height is about 2 3/4 (2.75) inches. The inside length and width, as measured near the bottom, about 1/4" above the bottom: 8 1/4" x 6 1/4". The inside length and width near the top is 9 3/16" x 7 1/4". Exterior measurements with the plastic lid on: height is 3"; and length and width are 9 7/8" x almost 8" wide, measured at the lid.

We have owned other types of Pyrex glassware for more years. These containers seem just slightly thinner than the Pyrex "Storage Deluxe" containers which are extra thick. Butcher Block Trash Bin with Pantry Review

Butcher Block Trash Bin with Pantry

This is an OK bin. It serves its purpose but for $118 plus tax and shipping I was expecting a higher quality product. It's pretty easy to assemble but it's all made of pressed wood and laminate and the whole thing is held together with wood dowels and glue. There are no screws or bolts holding any major pieces together so once it's assembled don't move it around too much or lift by the top. It's nice looking though and if it were cheaper (say less than $70) it would be worth purchasing.

Catskill Craftsmen Cuisine Cart IV Review

Catskill Craftsmen Cuisine Cart IV
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After searching on and off for a year I finally gave up finding anything local. I searched the internet for weeks looking for just the right cart. Our kitchen is small and there is one spot that a cart will fit. The dimensions were critical and this cart was just right. I ordered it from Amazon and It came in a heavy flat box within about 5 or so days. I read the directions first before starting on it. Then opened the box and spread out all the parts on the floor. I have never bought ANY product in all my 60+ years that had assembly directions as complete as Catskill Craftsmen. I am mechanically able to figure it out no matter how bad the directions, but this product...well they have spent the time to get it right and with diagrams showing what you are doing along the way. It took me about an hour and a half, taking my time,to put it together. This is not a quick "throw together" project, but if you take your time, with the great instructions, you can do it even if your not super handy. The wood is a little rough in spots so a little sand paper helps smooth things out a bit here and there. This thing is rock solid. I have a large (same size as the cart's top)microwave on top of it and there is no wobble or frame shifting within the cart sides. The sturdy top drawer is deep, slides in and out easy and has a stop so it won't pull all the way out and land on the floor! Note: I didn't want to use a towel bar with mine. You can choose which side the pre drilled panel is on so you can put it on either side and not see holes on the other. For me I put the pre drilled panel against the fridge so you don't see the holes because I didn't use the towel bar at all. (The holes are small anyway you could fill'em in with wood filler.) If I had to make a suggestion it would be to somehow offer different finished to better match your kitchen. That said you can always do that yourself with stain if you wanted to. After spending so much of my time looking, I feel good about my choice because I bought a great product,(Being Green helps too!)built solid, looks great, very good value for the money (I had planned to spend more.) If you like what you see in the picture, buy it you won't be disapointed

Catskill Craftsmen Open Storage Cuisine Cart Review

The box was very heavy and it was difficult trying to identify what part was what. I had to use the manual and match each item with the picture. I found a bag of washers and two screws missing and found it very difficult to contact the manufacturer using their website. It appears only fairly easy way to contact them is by telephone. Unfortunately when I found the problem it was after 4PM EST so had to wait until after the weekend. The product appears to be very well made. I would storngly suggest purchasing two products they suggested. One is a butcher block oil. The one they suggested is totally natural and organic and has no chemicals and it seals the wood so nothing stains it very easily. Second item was beeswax. That seals the rough cut ends of each part so moisture won't seep in and start to lift the wood layers from the rough cut ends.

OXO Good Grips 10-Piece POP Container Set Review

OXO Good Grips 10-Piece POP Container Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Overview:
I have purchased many of these storage containers, in various sizes. As with most OXO products, I have been extremely satisfied with them, and I would buy them again. More importantly, my wife appears to be equally impressed with her gift.
That being said, I don't think they would work as well for everyone, as they do for us. They are expensive, and they are not necessarily the best choice for a home with small children. As such, I will provide you with my observations, and leave it up to you to decide how they would fit into your personal lifestyle.
The pros:
They seal flawlessly, and with great ease. I believe they are the best product available for keeping the freshness in, and the bugs out. They stack nicely, and their clear siding permits easy identification of the contents within. Their rounded corners make pouring a breeze.
These containers come in a variety of sizes, and meet all of our kitchen dry-storage needs. They work for everything from baking goods, to cereals and crackers, to bread. Yes, the two largest container sizes can hold a normal-sized loaf of bread, and keep it fresh for much longer.
They have really helped organize the pantry, which looks great, and makes it much easier to evaluate how much of a product requires replentishment, prior to shopping.
The cons:
First, many of them (especially the larger sizes) are not packaged well for shipping, and they have arrived in broken condition. Fortunately, Amazon Customer Service has promptly replaced them, without delay. To me, the long-term convenience far outweighs the short-term frustration.
Second, we have not broken any of them after delivery, but we are also quite careful in their handling. I'm not sure how well they would do with small children, so be advised before you invest. I suspect a single drop on the hard kitchen floor would result in a damaged container, but I am not willing to test my hypothesis at this price.
Third, they are not dishwasher safe, except for the silicon sealing ring. For us, this has not been a major issue, but it may be a problem for others. Personally, we have found their non-pourous construction to be easy to clean, so we don't mind hand washing them.
Pre-purchase planning:
Be aware that for stacking purposes, the containers come in three shapes (from the top view): small-square shape, large-square shape, and rectangular shape. While you can sometimes mix them for stacking, in general, I find that it is best to stick to one shape (for a particular stack).
Also, be aware that you get more bang-for-the-buck with the larger sizes. The relationship between the price of the container and the volume of storage is indirect. In short, less storage costs you more money.
In general, I find the large-square shape and the rectangular shape to be the most beneficial. They permit easy access, and they allow the buyer more options regarding what to put in them. That being said, understand that the prepackaged sets tend to come with a lot of the small-square shaped containers.
The smallest sizes have limited functionality, but can be useful for storing raisons, small candies, etc. As for the spices mentioned by the manufacturer, spices usually come in a bottle. For those that don't, I believe there are better (and cheaper) products available.
Summary:
For those willing to deal with the shipping issues, the risk of future breakage, and the hand-washing, I think this is by far the best product on the market. With care, they will save you money in the long-run because: they keep things fresh, they keep the bugs out, and they make it easy to avoid the over-buying or the under-buying of groceries. They are a quality product, and they make the kitchen look great.
Whether you want to buy many of them or just a few, I generally recommend the larger sizes. They provide the best bang-for-the-buck, and permit greater flexibility. Specifically, I would start with a few of the large-square types to see if you like them as much as I do.
Thank you for those who posted before me. Much of what I have said consolidates what you mentioned before, and really helped with my purchasing decisions. For those of you still stuck in the decision-making process; good luck! I hope this helps out a little.

BUTTER KEEPER with Measure Grid Review

BUTTER KEEPER with Measure Grid
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I like this butter dish. It fits inside the compartment in our refrigerator door and I like that it's clear and you can see the butter stick inside it. The measuring marks can be handy at times, too. The lid fits nice and snug so you can lift the dish by the lid and it won't come off. The only thing to comment on is that the bottom, where the butter stick sits, is flat, i.e. no ridge or well to hold the stick in place. So, the butter stick can slide a little on the surface and if you're a bit messy with the butter, the butter can get off the edge of the dish a bit. But, that has not been a problem for us, as we don't see it getting messy enough to matter, and we don't leave our butter sitting out where it could begin to melt and try to run off the bottom. So, we recommend this butter dish as a good one to try if you're in the market for such a thing! We like ours!

i purchased this set from target, same price. i was in the market for new bakeware and checked out a couple different brands. i am very earth friendly, so trying to find bakeware without scary chemicals was pretty difficult. some brands do not even tell you what material is made of or what is put on them to make them non-stick.
i figure you cannot go wrong with glass- and even better, glass that was made in america.
like all other glass things, you'll need to spray or use parchment paper to avoid stuck food, and of course glass is breakable. i especially loved the fact that you can cook, store, and reheat all in the same container. however, you must make sure your oven is preheated prior to cooking and that your food is cooled before sticking in the fridge.
overall, a great product from a company that stayed in the usa.
