(More customer reviews)We did finally purchase these because our Fiestaware plates are so thick, they pull the heat from your food. These heat mats definitely do what they claim, but there are a couple of things that concerned us. First, they DO smell like a car tire when heated. You don't have to have a sensitive nose to get this. The smell of car tires isn't the worst thing, but I don't think it's very appetizing, either. The smell does transfer to the plate until the condensation evaporates, but we did notice that they sometimes leave a film on the plate that doesn't go away with the condensation. Not sure if this is something the silicone secretes, or some kind of other reaction to heat, but I don't want it on my food. We have been able to wipe it off with a dry paper towel and have continued to use the heat mats, despite this nuisance. That said, we certainly do like having warmer food on our plates. I just hope I don't start turning into Lou Ferrigno!
